October on the Island
By the end of October the wind picks up and the temperature drops down so that you have to wear pants sometimes and even socks at night. By the first week of November, most of the island closes down. For five months the locals go on vacation or visit family in Athens or for a very few, hunker down to suffer sub-70-degree weather. Benveniste's mother ran a little shop in Mykonos and so the two of them spent many winters in Athens at her brother's, an early computer programmer named Vassili. This is where Benveniste first started learning about computers.

This was Mykonos, so even in the city, protected by the port, the wind came and didn't let up.
